Understanding Huntington's Disease

Huntington's Disease is an inherited, progressive degenerative brain disorder that affects both mind and body. Symptoms may include involuntary movements, Personality change, depression, withdrawal, and difficulty thinking.

HD is a genetic disorder that is usually inherited within families. Both men and women have a equal chance of inheriting the gene from an affected parent. The children of an individual with HD each have a 50 percent chance of inheriting the gene.

While there is not a current cure for this disease, researchers have made significant progress and are optimistic about future treatments.

As an HDSA Center of Excellence, the goals of the Huntington's Disease Family Center are:

    1) To provide quality comprehensive affordable care and education to those affected by HD and their families.

    2) To assist with symptom management for individuals with HD and their families and caregivers.

    3) To find treatments to slow the progression of the disease while working toward a cure through clicnical research.
